The prizes for this competition were provided by the Kathryn M. Wake Fund. In the 1930s, Kay took her first job, as a teacher in a rural community in Quebec. Each morning she rode her horse to the one-room schoolhouse and lit a fire in the potbelly stove.

When she retired fifty years later, after a successful career teaching in Ottawa, her family set up this fund to honour her dedication, warmth and humour.
